Goodbye MT

Dear Movable Type,

No thanks, I’d rather not part with that much scrilla. I would have thrown you a few bucks, but you had to go straight for the jugular.

You may have wanted to consider the fact that your competitors offer pretty much the same features and are still free. At the very least, you should have poked around to see what your current users thought about the new pricing scheme. Too late now, they’ll be jumping ship like rats- not even bothering to notice that we could just keep the current version.

Goodbye MT, hello textpattern, wordpress or drupal.

Blog Publishing Idea #256

Somebody needs to come up with a box on the comment template where people can bust out a trackback to an earlier post they did in the same subject. As we all pile our archives into these massive heaps, it would be a nice way to keep them alive.

You know how it is, you see someone else talk about something you said a while back, but you don’t want to be a dork and leave a comment like, “cool- now everyone go check out what I wrote on the subject.” But, what if it was expected? What if there was already a box for you to paste the URL of a post you did on the subject? It could just be entered in the trackback section. We already ping each other when we reference each other’s posts. And, really, more people need to understand what trackacks are anyway.

This would create more of a web of useful dialogues. Posts of similar relevance would all be able to continue throughout the web. One would start here, resume there a month later and then pop up a bunch more places a year from then.

I’ll see what I can do to whip up something like it when I have a minute. In the meantime if anyone has seen something like it let me know.

Bloggers At Coachella

I still haven’t collected my thoughts on Coachella- they’re all over my livingroom floor with the stuff I have yet to unpack. But I noticed a cool phenom- there’s a bazillion bloggers who went to coachella. Next year we totally have to do some community blog together with a blogroll, reviews, photos, etc. For now, I thought I’d try to round up a bunch of blogs that are featuring posts aobut it.

If I missed you. please let me know.

Is Google Gonna Rollback RSS?

I was reading a post ofer at Adam Curry’s blog titled, Google’s Destiny is History. He’s referencing a few other guys in saying that Google is going to come out with a new aggregator and gonna try to force us all to switch to ATOM instead of RSS for syndication.

Now, I’ve always liked Google. They’ve done an impressive job not only surviving the bubble, but building a solid business. But I agree- there needs to be more of a sense of collaboration in this whole syndication thing. Competition is good, but not at the expense of your customers. When you all come out with different standards, we’ll have to pick them all. IM lately?

Well, I hope that this whole thing ends well, ’cause I don’t have the time to figure it all out. Me likes my aggregator and that’s about as deep as I want to get.
